Betrayal & Relationship Trauma Therapy
in East Nashville

Something Broke. And You're Trying to Figure Out What Comes Next.

Betrayal in a relationship — an affair, a broken trust, an emotional injury that cuts to the core of what you thought you had — doesn't just hurt. It destabilizes everything. The person who was supposed to be your safe place became the source of the wound. And now you're both standing in the aftermath, trying to figure out if there's anything left to stand on.

You may not know yet whether you want to repair this. You may not know whether repair is even possible. What you do know is that what happened can't be undone — and that the relationship you had before no longer exists in the same form.

That's not the end of the story. But it is the beginning of a very different one.

This Is Therapy for the Injured Relationship

Most people think of betrayal therapy as support for the hurt partner. And the pain of the hurt partner is real, profound, and deserving of full acknowledgment — there is no minimizing what betrayal costs someone who trusted completely.

But the work here is broader than that. This is therapy for the injured relationship — for both people, and for what's between them. Because betrayal doesn't happen in a vacuum. It forces an honest reckoning not just with what happened, but with what was already there. What wasn't being said. What needs weren't being met. What the relationship had become before the betrayal occurred.

That reckoning is painful. It's also necessary. And it belongs to both of you.

What We're Working Toward

The goal of this work isn't to save the relationship at any cost. It isn't to assign blame or determine who was more at fault. And it certainly isn't to minimize or rush past the very real injury that was done.

The goal is clarity. Honesty. The capacity to make a real decision — together — about whether this relationship has a future, and if so, what that future needs to look like to be genuinely different from what came before.

Sometimes couples who do this work find their way to a relationship that is stronger, more honest, and more deeply connected than the one they had before the betrayal. Sometimes they discover, with clarity and care, that the relationship has reached its natural end. Both outcomes are valid. Both can be reached with integrity.

This therapy is not about determining which outcome is right. It's about helping you get there honestly.

How We Work With It

I draw primarily on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) — one of the most well-researched approaches for couples navigating attachment injuries and betrayal.

EFT understands betrayal as an attachment injury — a moment when the person who was supposed to be the source of safety became the source of threat. That injury doesn't just damage trust. It disrupts the entire attachment bond — the nervous system, the sense of self, the ability to feel safe in the relationship.

The EFT approach to betrayal focuses on three things:

Understanding what happened — not just the event itself, but the emotional landscape that surrounded it. What each partner was experiencing. What wasn't being reached for or responded to. What the relationship was carrying before the betrayal occurred.

Holding the injury honestly — creating space for the hurt partner's pain to be fully seen and acknowledged by the partner who caused it. This is not a rushed process. The injury deserves real witnessing before any repair can begin.

Exploring what's possible — once the emotional reality has been honestly faced, beginning to ask what this relationship could become. What would need to be genuinely different. Whether both partners have the capacity and the willingness to build something new together.

We typically meet with both partners present. There may be occasional individual sessions early in the process when that serves the work — but this is fundamentally couples work, held with care for both people in the room.

This Might Be You If...

  • You're in the aftermath of an affair or emotional betrayal and don't know where to turn

  • You want to understand what happened before you decide what to do next

  • You're the hurt partner carrying pain, confusion, and a grief you didn't expect

  • You're the partner who betrayed and want to take genuine responsibility and understand why

  • You both want to know whether repair is possible — but aren't sure yet if you want it

  • You're willing to look honestly at the relationship, not just the event

  • You want support in making a real decision — not pressure toward any particular outcome

  • You're separated but haven't closed the door entirely

What This Work Is Not

This is couples therapy for betrayal — emotionally focused, relationally honest, and held with care for both partners.

It does not provide legal advice of any kind. For legal questions related to separation, divorce, or any other legal matter please consult a qualified family law attorney.
