Burnout Therapy in East Nashville

Burnout Isn't Just Exhaustion. It's Misalignment.

You're tired. But it's not the kind of tired that sleep fixes. You've had rest — weekends, vacations, time off — and come back to find the same flatness waiting for you. The same going through the motions. The same quiet dread on Sunday evenings. The same question underneath it all that you haven't quite been able to answer: why does none of this feel like enough?

Burnout is often described as the result of working too hard for too long. And the exhaustion is real — it shows up in your body, your relationships, your ability to care about anything at all. But the exhaustion is a symptom. The deeper issue is misalignment.

When the way you're spending your energy — your time, your attention, your effort — is disconnected from what actually matters to you, something starts to hollow out. Not all at once. Slowly, over time, until you find yourself functioning well enough on the outside and running on empty on the inside.

That's not a productivity problem. That's a values problem. And it asks for something different than a better morning routine.

What's Actually Happening

Burnout doesn't just happen at work. It happens anywhere we spend ourselves in ways that don't feel like ours — chasing approval, meeting others' expectations, performing a version of ourselves that fits the role but not the person inside it.

The attachment lens matters here too. When our environment — our workplace, our relationships, our roles — consistently fails to meet our need for connection, meaning, and genuine recognition, the nervous system responds. We brace. We shut down. We go through the motions as a form of self-protection.

The cycles that EFT helps us understand are present in burnout too. The stories we tell ourselves about what we owe, what we're worth, what we're allowed to want. The emotional patterns those stories activate. The ways we keep showing up for things that stopped feeling meaningful long ago because stopping feels even more frightening than continuing.

Understanding those cycles — feeling into what's been driving the depletion — is often where something begins to shift.

How We Work With It

I draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — with ACT taking particular center stage in burnout work.

With EFT we look at what's underneath the exhaustion. The attachment patterns, the stories about worth and obligation, the emotional cycles keeping you in misalignment. We explore what you've been reaching for — recognition, meaning, belonging, safety — and what's actually been available. Understanding the gap between what you need and what your current life is providing is often the first honest step toward changing it.

With ACT we do the work of reorientation. Not by fixing what's broken or optimizing your schedule — but by getting radically honest about what's actually available to you right now and what provides genuine purpose and meaning in your life.

Acceptance first — of where you are, what you feel, what hasn't been working. Not resignation. Honest acknowledgment of what is, without the additional weight of fighting it.

Then values. What actually matters to you — stripped of expectation, obligation, and what you think you should want. What lights something up when you're honest with yourself. What you want your life to be organized around.

Then movement. Toward that. Deliberately. At a pace that's real. Not a dramatic overhaul but a gradual reorientation toward what provides genuine meaning — so that over time the life you're living starts to feel more like yours.

This Might Be You If...

  • You're exhausted in a way that rest doesn't fix

  • You're functioning well on the outside and running on empty on the inside

  • Work — or life in general — has stopped feeling meaningful but you don't know how to change it

  • You're going through the motions and not sure when that started

  • Sunday evenings carry a dread you can't fully explain

  • You've achieved things you thought would matter and found they don't

  • You feel like you're performing a version of yourself that fits the role but not the person

  • Cynicism, detachment, or numbness have replaced engagement and care

  • You know something needs to change but can't see clearly what or how

  • You want to reconnect with what matters — not just recover enough to keep going

This Isn't About Working Less

The instinct when burnout hits is to think about subtraction — fewer hours, less responsibility, more time off. And rest is genuinely necessary. But rest alone doesn't solve misalignment.

What this work is about isn't reducing what you do. It's getting clear on what you're doing it for. Finding the thread back to meaning. Rebuilding a relationship with your own values that's strong enough to guide how you spend yourself going forward.

Some people discover that what they do is actually deeply meaningful — but how they've been doing it has disconnected them from that meaning. Others discover that something genuinely needs to change — a role, a relationship, a story they've been telling themselves about what they owe. Both are worth knowing. And both start with the same honest look at what's actually going on underneath the exhaustion.

A Note on Private Pay

I work with new clients on a private pay basis. No diagnosis required to begin — burnout doesn't need a clinical label to deserve real support. Sessions are $175.  Learn more about how that works →
