When Everything You Were Taught to Believe Stops Making Sense

Something shifted. Maybe it happened slowly — a question here, a doubt there, something you couldn't unsee once you saw it. Maybe it happened all at once, and the system you built your life around simply stopped holding. Either way, you find yourself somewhere you didn't expect to be — questioning things you were never supposed to question, grieving things you're not sure you're allowed to grieve, and trying to figure out who you are when the framework that used to define you no longer fits.

This is deconstruction. And it's one of the most disorienting, courageous, and ultimately meaningful things a person can go through.

What's Happening

Deconstruction is often described as tearing something down. But what we're really doing — underneath the questioning and the unraveling — is something more significant than demolition.

We're constructing something new.

Not returning to what was. Not landing on someone else's answers. But building, carefully and honestly, a framework that's more deeply connected to who you actually are — your values, your experience, your understanding of yourself and the world and what it means to live well in it.

That construction takes time. And it rarely happens alone.

The Losses Nobody Talks About

Deconstruction isn't just an intellectual exercise. It's an emotional one — and often a devastating one. The losses that come with leaving or questioning a faith tradition go far beyond belief itself.

The community that was your entire social world. The identity that organized everything — how you saw yourself, your relationships, your purpose. The relationship with God or the sacred that may have been the most intimate one you had. The sense of certainty that, whatever else was uncertain, at least you knew this.

Those losses are real. They deserve to be grieved — not rushed through, not reframed too quickly, not minimized by anyone who hasn't sat in them.

This is where the work begins. Not in answers. In honest acknowledgment of what this has cost.

How We Work

I draw on two approaches that work particularly well together for deconstruction — Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

With EFT we look at the attachment cycles that faith and religious systems create — and what happens to those cycles when the system itself comes into question. Our relationship to God, to church, to spiritual community often operates through the same attachment patterns as our closest human relationships. The fear of abandonment. The longing for acceptance. The grief of rupture. The anger that comes when what felt like unconditional love turns out to have conditions.

Understanding those cycles — feeling into what's actually happening emotionally beneath the theological questions — is often where something important begins to shift. The questions don't disappear. But they stop being so overwhelming when we understand what's driving them from beneath the surface.

With ACT we begin to build. Clarity about what you actually value — not what you were taught to value, not what earns approval, but what resonates as true when you strip away the inherited framework. Psychological flexibility — the capacity to hold uncertainty without being paralyzed by it. And a growing sense of who you are and how you want to live, relate, and move through the world when the old answers no longer hold.

Deconstruction, in this light, isn't the end of something. It's the beginning of a more honest life.

This Might Be You If...

  • You grew up in an evangelical or conservative religious tradition and something has stopped adding up

  • You're asking questions you were never supposed to ask — and finding you can't stop

  • You've left a faith community and don't know who you are outside of it

  • You're grieving a version of God, a community, or a version of yourself that no longer exists

  • You feel caught between the world you came from and the one you're moving toward

  • You've lost relationships because of where your questions have taken you

  • You want to believe something — you're just not sure what anymore

  • You're tired of pretending to be further along than you are

  • You want support that doesn't have an agenda for where you should land

You Don't Have to Land Anywhere Yet

One of the things I hear most from people in deconstruction is the pressure — from themselves and from others — to figure it out. To land somewhere. To know what they believe.

This work has no agenda for where you end up. What it does have is deep respect for the process of getting there honestly. You're allowed to not know. You're allowed to grieve what you've lost and be angry about what was taken. You're allowed to hold questions without answers for as long as you need to.

And you're allowed to build something new — something that actually fits — at whatever pace is real.

Why East Nashville

East Nashville holds a particular kind of person — one who has taken creative and personal risks, who values authenticity over performance, who has often left something behind in order to become more fully themselves. Deconstruction fits that territory. If you've found your way here, you're probably not alone in this neighborhood in what you're carrying.

A Note on Private Pay

I work with new clients on a private pay basis. No diagnosis required to begin — deconstruction doesn't need a clinical label to deserve real support. Sessions are $175.  Learn more about how that works →
