Depression Therapy in East Nashville

Still Showing Up. But Not Really There.

You're doing what you're supposed to do. Going to work. Keeping the commitments. Maintaining the relationships. From the outside, things look fine — maybe even good.

But underneath that, something is missing. A flatness that follows you from room to room. A disconnection from things that used to matter. A quiet sense that you're moving through your life rather than actually living it.

That's not laziness. It's not ingratitude. And it's not a permanent state of being — even when it feels like one.

What's Happening

Depression rarely arrives as a single, identifiable thing. More often it builds — slowly, quietly — through the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, what we deserve, what's possible for us. Those stories activate emotions. Those emotions reinforce the stories.

And the cycle runs, often just beneath the surface of a life that looks perfectly functional from the outside.

What gets lost in that cycle isn't just happiness. It's agency. The sense that you have a say in how things go. That the life you're living could actually feel like yours.

That's what this work is about — not just lifting the weight of depression, but finding your way back to a life that feels meaningful and worth inhabiting.

How We Work With It

I draw on two approaches that work particularly well together for depression — Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

With EFT we look at the internal cycle keeping you in the depressive state. The narrative running underneath — about your worth, your place, what you're allowed to want or feel. The emotions those narratives activate, and the ways those emotions loop back to confirm the story. Understanding that cycle from the inside — feeling into what's actually there beneath it — is often where things begin to shift. When the narrative finally makes sense, it starts to lose its hold.

With ACT we build something in place of what we uncover. Not a forced positivity or a set of strategies to try harder — but a genuine reconnection with what matters to you. Your values. The kind of life you actually want to be living. And the psychological flexibility to move toward that life — not because the depression has disappeared, but because it no longer has to be the thing that decides what's possible.

This is the work of moving from surviving to living. From going through the motions to being genuinely present in your own life.

This Might Be You If...

  • You're functioning well on the outside but feel flat, empty, or disconnected underneath

  • Things that used to bring you joy feel hollow or out of reach

  • You wake up going through the motions without quite knowing why

  • You feel like a version of yourself that's been turned down — present but not really there

  • You've been carrying a low-grade sadness or numbness for so long it feels normal

  • Relationships feel harder to access — even with people you love

  • You know something needs to change but can't quite find the energy or direction to change it

  • Life looks fine from the outside and feels unrecognizable from the inside

This Isn't About Fixing You

Depression is not a character flaw or a failure of willpower. It's a signal — often a very human response to living in ways that don't align with who we are or what we actually need.

The work here isn't prescriptive. There's no checklist, no five-step program, no pressure to feel better on a schedule. What there is — is space. To slow down. To look honestly at the cycle that's been running. To find what matters to you beneath the weight of what hasn't been working. And to start moving toward that, at whatever pace is real.

Agency doesn't return all at once. But it returns. And when it does, things begin to change — not because you fixed something, but because you found your way back to yourself.

A Note on Private Pay

I work with new clients on a private pay basis. No diagnosis required to begin — and no insurance company defining what our work should look like or how long it should take. 50-minute sessions are $175. Learn more about how that works.
